This year we have employed a Gamekeeper (Sam) and he’s already done a fantastic job through the spring and early summer with staggering trapping returns at Deepdale. We have some great hatches of wild birds, far in excess of anything seen in previous years. We have released 3000 Pheasants this year and they have done far better than in recent years so we are looking forward to a bumper season and Sam’s goal is to raise our average daily return and also get us through the 100 bird mark on some days.
Proceeds from any Let Places go across to our Gamekeeper as part of his payment so if you wish to book any pegs let me know and I will pass details to Sam as he’s taking bookings now. He has 8 pegs available over the dates shown.
I have put a brief profile below:
The Stobgreen Shooting Syndicate extends over two areas of land, one of about 400 acres at Stobgreen on the fringes of Eggleston Moor and the other of about 700 acres at Deepdale, Lartington. Both areas of land are within 5 miles of Barnard Castle in the Upper Tees Valley which is close the A66 and gives access to the A1 in 20 minutes and M6 in 40 minutes.
Stobgreen Plantation is situated on the South facing slope on the edge of Eggleston Moor and overlooking the Upper Tees Valley with views extended to Wemmergill, Holwick, Cotherstone and Bowes Moors. Stobgreen was a small Grouse Moor until the 50’s when it was put into commercial forestry. Over the last 20 years the plantation has been extensively felled and sympathetically replanted or left to regenerate so that we now have a patchwork of mixed age timber, new plantings, open cover and moorland. Drives are varied over clearings, streams, valleys and roads with most dropping downhill giving testing shooting. Although a former commercial forest which is often associated with a lack of ground cover much of the original planting at Stobgreen was thin or unsuccessful so we do have heavy and varied ground cover which makes it perfect for Pheasant and Woodcock. We now have an area of about 100 acres of pioneer heather on the edge of Eggleston Moor and we do hold good numbers of Grouse. Stobgreen also has 10 duck flight ponds. Stobgreen has 10 Main Pheasant Drives, 4 outer Pheasant Drives and 2 small Grouse Drives
Deepdale is a traditional shoot which was planted up and managed as a Sporting estate. We have 2 lakes at Deepdale which provide good duck shooting. Deepdale has a magnificent lunch hut that is the hub for many social days and we use this on as many shoot days as possible. Deepdale has varied terrain with drives from Game Crops, small woods, the High Lake Snipe Bogs and, as the name suggests, the very deep Deepdale!! Deepdale has 12 drives in use.
All shooting is on a stand one/walk one basis. With the exception of Grouse we do not shoot in the beating line.
Our shoot is not motivated by numbers and if that’s your only interest then you won’t need to contact us. On a shoot day you join our syndicate members taking up any available places that crop up die to absence. You will join us and shoot with us as if you were a syndicate members and we are looking for safe, sociable and physically fit people as the going is tough. Days are about camaraderie, sportsmanship and helping to ensure everyone has a great day. We anticipate bags in the region of 60-80 at Stobgreen and 40-60 at Deepdale. Our birds are challenging and varied so the final bag doesn’t reflect the birds presented or shot count!! Deepdale can be particularly challenging with some seriously tall birds from mid-November onwards. Early season at Stobgreen can see bags at the lower end of the scale as we usually do 1-2 Grouse Drives and that reduces the overall bag size but greatly increases the quality
